Landmark Showcase:

The landmark of the week is Howard Street. The Howard Street District in Akron, Ohio served as the epicenter for the city's African-American community. It was known for its affluent jazz scene from the 30s to the 50s. It also hosted legendary musicians like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Cab Calloway. On top of that, the district was not only about music; it was filled with bustling clubs, restaurants, and shops. Howard Street also played an important role in the civil rights movement, with local leaders and residents actively participating in efforts to combat racial discrimination. However, the district faced major challenges starting in the 1960s due to urban renewal projects, which sadly led to the demolition of many buildings and displacement of residents leading to the area's downturn. Today, there are ongoing efforts to recognize and preserve the historical significance of Howard Street. Initiatives include things like focusing on economic development, cultural preservation, and community engagement. New developments and cultural events are being organized to celebrate the district's rich history and reconnect the community and foster a renewed sense of growth and heritage.
Story Of The Week: “Hate Hits Home: KKK Flyers Discovered in Akron Sparking Outrage and Investigation”

In Akron, Ohio, the community is reeling after the discovery of racist flyers promoting the Ku Klux Klan on residents' doorsteps earlier this week. The offensive flyers, which featured racist caricatures of Black people and a call for white people to arm themselves, were reported to the Akron Police Department by concerned residents. Mayor Shammas Malik and Acting Police Chief Brian Harding condemned the flyers in a joint statement, declaring that racism and hate have no place in Akron. Residents expressed justifiable fear and outrage over the hateful messages. This event is part of a broader pattern, with similar flyers found in Cleveland's Hough neighborhood and other parts of the United States. Akron police are actively investigating and working with other cities to gather information and pursue those responsible.
