Story Of The Week:

Akron City Council's Doorbell Camera Safety Project, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, commenced with a two-phase rollout strategy. In the initial phase, over 400 cameras were strategically distributed across wards deemed as high-priority zones, including wards three, four, and five. These areas were identified based on input from the Akron Police Department, aiming to address localized crime concerns and enhance overall neighborhood security. The primary objective of phase one was to provide residents and law enforcement with an additional tool for monitoring and deterring criminal activity. Notably, a resident doorbell cameras played a pivotal role in solving a series of local thefts, demonstrating the effectiveness of the program. Building on the success of phase one, the initiative expanded in phase two to encompass the entire city of Akron. An additional 300 cameras per ward were made available during council ward meetings, extending the program's reach to a broader cross-section of the community. Residents, both homeowners and renters are encouraged to participate in phase two of the program. By fostering collaboration between residents and law enforcement, the initiative seeks to create safer and more secure neighborhoods across the city.
