Fact Of The Day: First Police Car

The history of Akron's first police car is a pretty fascinating one. In 1899, the Akron Police Department introduced the first electric police car in the United States. This vehicle was built by the Collins Buggy Company, a local manufacturer known for its horse-drawn carriages. The electric police car was equipped with a stretcher, lights, and a gong, serving multiple purposes from transporting prisoners to rushing officers to crime scenes. This pioneer spirit of Akron went on to but set a precedent for the future use of motor vehicles in police work nationwide.
Story of the week: Software Glitch Causes Minor Disruptions in Akron City Services

Akron city staff discovered issues caused by a faulty software update issued July 18th by the US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. The firm has confirmed that this is not a security incident or cyberattack.
The outage affected some city devices and servers, though core city services remain operational. Critical functions, including 911 dispatch operations and water and wastewater services, continue to run smoothly without serious disruption.
IT personnel are working diligently to restore full functionality to other departments and systems. All city buildings remain open to the public, and employees are reporting to work as usual. However, some city services, including 311 website access, the Utilities Business Office, Income Tax, and city golf courses, may have experienced slight delays.
Mayor Malik expressed his gratitude for the residents' patience and understanding. “Our critical and core city functions and services are working as intended, and we expect to have all other functionality back up and running very soon. I want to express my sincere appreciation to our IT staff for their diligence in quickly catching these issues last night and their swift work in addressing the problems,” he stated.
