Story of the week: Massive Sinkhole Swallows Up Akron's East Buchtel Avenue!

On Saturday, a sinkhole incident unfolded in Akron, Ohio, leading to the closure of a section of East Buchtel Avenue. The sinkhole, which opened at 680 East Buchtel Avenue, caused a significant portion of the road to collapse. The sinkhole was said to be several feet wide and deep, consuming asphalt, bricks, and road markings. Residents in the area said that the road sunk rapidly so they tried to alert drivers and utilize things like crates from nearby gas stations to barricade the area. Akron Mayor Shammas Malik stated that crews were working to fill the sinkhole with stone and install steel plates as a temporary measure until a full repair could be completed. Despite ongoing efforts, the cause of the sinkhole remained undetermined, leaving officials uncertain about the road's long term stability and safety. Authorities opted to close the affected stretch of East Buchtel Avenue for the weekend but provisions were made to ensure continued access for businesses and residents in the area.
