Story Of The Week:

On April 1, in Akron, Ohio, a police officer, Ryan Vayda Westlake, shot a 15-year-old boy, Tavion Koonce-Williams, who was holding what appeared to be a fake gun. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. after a woman reported seeing a Black male pointing a gun at houses in the area. Responding to the call, Westlake found Tavion walking on a block and fired a single shot, hitting him in the wrist. Body-camera footage released later showed Tavion repeatedly shouting, "It's fake!" after being shot.
Tavion's family confirmed that he was carrying a toy gun, and an attorney for the family emphasized that at no point did Tavion pose a threat to anyone. The incident sparked outrage and calls for transparency and justice.
Westlake's personnel file revealed a history of disciplinary actions, including previous use-of-force incidents and violations of department policy. Notably, in May 2021, Westlake was suspended for using profanity, using an anti-gay slur, and pointing his firearm at his girlfriend while intoxicated. However, he was reinstated after appealing the termination and agreeing to a suspension without pay.
The shooting reignited discussions about police use of force, particularly concerning Black youth. Many questioned why lethal force was used, especially when Tavion was complying with the officer's commands.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with both state and local authorities involved. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation, and its findings will be reviewed by the state attorney general's office before being presented to a Summit County grand jury. Additionally, the Akron Police Department's Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will conduct an internal investigation.
