Fact Of The Day: Akron's Ice cream Cone Invention

The ice cream cone, a beloved treat enjoyed worldwide, has a special connection to Akron, Ohio, through its role in the commercial development and popularization of this sweet innovation.
While the idea of serving ice cream in a cone dates back to the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, where a Syrian concession stand man named Ernest A. Hamwi helped an ice cream vendor by rolling his zalabia pastries into cones, the story takes a bit of a turn.
In 1912, an entrepreneur from Akron named Frederick Bruckman, patented a machine that could efficiently produce rolled ice cream cones on a large scale. This invention was a game-changer, enabling mass production of the cones and making them widely available to the public. Bruckman’s machine brought the ice cream cone out of the fairgrounds and into everyday life, where it quickly became a staple in ice cream parlors across the country.
Akron’s industrial background played a huge role in propelling the ice cream cone into the mainstream, turning it from a novelty into an essential part of the ice cream experience. Thanks to Akron and Bruckman, enjoying ice cream in a cone became a common, delightful treat for people everywhere.
Story of the week: Summit County Floods Displace Residents, Damage Businesses

Central Summit County faced devastating flash flooding on Thursday night as the effects of Hurricane Debby swept through the area causing significant damage in Akron, Barberton, and Cuyahoga Falls. On Friday morning, cleanup efforts were underway, with crews assessing the destruction left by the torrential downpour. Roads were washed out, sidewalks and parking lots were covered in mud, and debris was scattered across the region. The Ohio Department of Transportation closed several roads, including Interstate 76 in Barberton.
In Akron, police and fire departments worked together to rescue 25 people stranded by rising waters. First responders used a community rescue vehicle to navigate flooded areas, rescuing occupants from vehicles caught in the dangerous conditions.
Barberton residents Roger and Tammy Mears narrowly escaped with their lives as floodwaters filled their basement, causing a wall to collapse. The couple lost decades of cherished memories in the flood.
The Merriman Valley area of Akron was hit particularly hard. A small creek that usually flows beneath a strip mall transformed into a raging river, severely damaging the Noisy Oyster, a popular neighborhood tavern. As employees and customers noticed water seeping through the floor, the situation escalated rapidly, with the floor buckling and water rushing in.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik visited the flood-ravaged areas on Friday, offering support to those affected. He emphasized the sudden and overwhelming nature of the storm, urging residents to remain cautious and avoid flooded roads. This flash flooding came just days after tornadoes and heavy rain had already caused widespread power outages across Northeast Ohio, leaving more than 200,000 residents still without power. As cleanup efforts continue, the city is asking residents to report issues such as sewer backups and downed trees to 3-1-1.
